Background Note:
Despite achieving excellent health indicators, malnutrition is a persisting problem in Sri Lanka. Interrelation between malnutrition and poverty and inequality is clear. Different agencies and actors are involved in a range of aspects of malnutrition to resolve this issue and also to mitigate the overall impact.
The blog discussion carried out through CEPA’s Poverty Portal during January- March “Malnutrition: Today’s Problem – Tomorrow’s Crisis” (http://povertyportal.lk/blogs/) has come up with interesting view points from a range of stakeholders on the research findings and gaps, the need for a holistic approach and coordination among different actors involved in the issue of malnutrition.
Given the importance and relevance of the issues, CEPA intends to take the discussion beyond the blog into a face to face forum discussion. CEPA’s 40th Open Forum aims to generate a dialogue on the issue of malnutrition and inequality among different groups and sectors, related gaps in research, policy and implementation. CEPA hopes that the discussion will lead to identifying research and policy/ intervention priorities that will mitigate malnutrition and inequality. The 40 OF is being organized with assistance from the Federich Ebert Stiftung Foundation in Sri Lanka through its support for the Poverty Portal.
