The Lunama and Kalametiya Lagoons are located on the South-Eastern coast of Sri Lanka in the Hambantota District about 200km from Colombo. In 1984, after the recognition of the importance of the two lagoons as wildlife habitats, an area of 700ha has been declared a Sanctuary under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance, under the Department of Wildlife Conservation. The overall objective of this study is to compile a comprehensive set of baseline data on biodiversity in the Lunama-Kalametiya wetland system in order to facilitate management of this protected area.
