The report is compiled by the Population and Demography Division, Department of Census and Statistics. This is the 14th consecutive population and housing census in Sri Lanka and the first census survey conducted island-wide since the country was liberated from terrorism. The report is essentially divided in two parts; part A is on population and part B on housing. The report was conducted in collaboration with local civil administrations such as district secretaries, with assistance from the UNDP, UNFPA and other authorities. The findings reported the total population of the country as 20.3 million, while growth in population is close to 1.0 percent over the past three decades. The report includes findings on population density, average age of marriage and the number of children born in a household. The report has also explores the migrant population. The census has also revealed that close to 5 million housing units exist in the country with the average occupants per household being 3.8 persons.
