The objective of this series of studies is to assess the manner in which children’s rights are observed in Sri Lankan society. This volume focuses on a study carried out in Kandy, in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. Shanty and slum dwellings usually come up in the neighborhood of cities. People, who do not have the social and economics means to lie in the plush interiors of the city, live along its periphery supplying small services to the city dwellers to make a livelihood. This study examines whether the rights of a child are upheld in such a community, and the degree to which the adults in this community fulfill the task of ensuring a child’s right.
