South Asia has made a significant commitment towards children and has achieved much for which it can be proud of in terms of human development. Today, more children are better off than they were a decade ago. Many more children are healthier today, are likely to see their fifth birthday, have better access to education and have higher hopes than the generation that preceded them. In spite of these laudable achievements in different aspects of the welfare of children, the region is still subject to severe violations and deprivations faced by millions of children in different spheres of life. This report summarises recent trends with regard to children’s wellbeing from a ‘rights’ perspective. The study has made use of a review and an analytical synthesis of existing information and consultations with experts in various areas such as health, early childhood development, education, and social politics, to analyse the situation of children in South Asia.
