This database is an attempt to update the database on Municipal Waste in Sri Lanka, published in 1999 December. The objective is to facilitate local authorities to develop and implement appropriate integrated waste management strategies and plans throughout the country. The overall objective is to promote implementation of waste prevention, reduction, reuse, recycling and final disposal of residual waste in an environmentally friendly manner. The database is divided into two components. The first part covers vital graphics indicating summarized data to provide an overall picture of the status of Municipal Waste Management in the country. The second part gives the detailed analysis of data at local authority, district and provincial levels. Population size, land area, availability of a method of disposal, resource availability, status of recycling and reuse of waste and the quantity and type of waste collection,pertaining to each local authority, have been included in the database.
