The primary object of this report is to formulate a set of food and nutrition policies and programmes for the period 2004-2010. This period is extremely significant from the angle of food and nutrition as the Government, in 2002, implemented fiscal policies with a serious commitment to make extensive structural adjustments in the overall economy of the country. The report outlines the present nutritional status of the population highlighting the incidence of malnutrition and nutrition imbalances. It examines the status of food security in relation to the nutritional value of the main food items and reviews the present food and nutrition policies, strategies and programmes and their implementation at household level. In addition, the report highlights food and nutrition policies, strategies and programmes for the improvement of household food and nutrition security. Finally the report identifies the means of mobilizing the resources available to implement these programmes.
