This book looks at how the Sri Lankan legal system has responded to violence against women. It focuses on three overarching areas on the constitutional framework, the criminal justice system and the judicial attitudes to violence as exhibited in the case law. It also deals briefly with some of the international and comparative standards on the subject. Although at a formal level the law offers a number of remedies, at a practical level these remedies have been difficult to access. This volume examines how judicial attitudes and institutional and procedural obstacles have prevented women victims of violence from accessing justice.
