The report profiles the lives of young women and men from seven different countries, who have developed a sub culture of their own that conflicts with the dominant culture of the region. They are seen to hold different views and are driven to uphold them. For instance, to promote gender sensitivity in religious institutions, oppose traditional harmful practices such as child marriage, promote peace in place of political and armed violence or even encourage youth participation in the government. Using these seven life stories as a foundation, the report highlights the interactions among culture, gender and human rights and the necessity to find culturally sensitive approaches for effective development policy and programming. Through a review of each of these cultural clashes, possible solutions for overcoming them have been provided. Ultimately, the youth supplement focuses on the role that can be played by the youth of the 21st century; as they happen to be poised at a junction between local and globalised values and are therefore viewed as the mediators between cultural traditions and cultural change.
