The United Nations designated 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity as a result of an agreement by world leaders to reduce the rate of biodiversity loss by 2010. To be effective, this bio diversity loss must take place at a global, regional and national level. Therefore this Outlook presents the case of biodiversity reduction and highlights the man-made causes for bio-diversity reduction while also conveying the various methods by which the crisis can be combatted. It looks at the species populations and extinction risks. It examines the nature of a few ecosystems such as the marine and the terrestrial ecosystems. It also discusses genetic diversity and the current pressures on biodiversity and presents ways of reducing biodiversity loss. It looks at the need for well-targeted policies that focus on the critical areas and the important role that decision makers play in reducing the biodiversity loss. Outlook 3 presents the need for the community to view this as an issue that is inter-linked with other more conventional concerns of society.
