This is a publication of the proceedings of the regional seminar on Intermediate Modes of Transport that was organized by the Lanka Forum on Rural Transport Development and held in Galle, Sri Lanka in 1998. The objective of this publication was to create an awareness of the issues related to the production, dissemination and use of Intermediate Modes of Transport (IMTs). IMTs are those transport technologies that fall between the two extremes of walking and modern four-wheeled motor vehicles such as cars, buses or trucks. IMTs exist in both urban and rural areas and can be a regulated as well as an unregulated modes of transport. All forms of IMTs that exist in Sri Lanka have been highlighted in this publication.
