The regional seminar and exhibition on Intermediate Modes of Transport is a part of an effort taken by the Lanka Forum on Rural Transport and Development to reduce transport burdens of rural communities and promote innovative solutions to their transport problems. This seminar was planned to share experiences on the use, production and dissemination of IMTs to create awareness of their capacity to meet many transport needs and to explore avenues for better use of IMTs. The study indicates the need for the introduction of IMTs in order to address the transport needs of urban and rural poor. Intermediate transport modes could also be introduced to surface transport, especially to inland road, sea and river systems in Sri Lanka. The study suggests that by developing more appropriate intermediate transport services, rural land can be made more productive, by lowering agricultural input prices, by marketing farm produce, by facilitating the exploitation of minerals and forests, by helping develop small scale industries, by improving leisure and access to public services and facilitating the individuals utility functions, by minimizing the wastage of rural agricultural production, and so on. This volume reproduces 17 papers that were presented at the seminar.
