Since the 1970s, economic migration has become a feature of the Sri Lankan economic and social environment. The latter has become a boon to the country in economic terms as it eased unemployment and enhanced foreign exchange earnings. The government began to intervene actively to encourage migration for employment, seeking new markets for labour migrants and introducing measures for worker welfare. In light of the fact that there was little awareness among government officials regarding the consequences of this phenomenon, a study was carried out. It is presented here in this volume, and is based on the experiences of Sri Lankan women migrant workers in Cyprus, Greece and Italy. The study also reflects on the impact of migration on the migrant,s families, on other individuals while also including the role played by several organizations. It provides a detailed analysis on the following topics: reasons for migration, recruitment channels and placement costs, working conditions, attitudes of employers and worker responses, remittances, channels and utilization of remittances, returnees, the impact on family and so on.
