Solid waste is a growing problem in Sri Lanka, aggravated in the absence of proper management systems. Development and implementation of a National Strategy for Solid Waste Management is essential in order to reduce environmental, social and economic problems associated with the present disposal practices. Recent analysis of data pertaining to solid waste revels that the real problem associated with solid waste at present lies, to a great extent, with the present haphazard disposal practices. This policy, therefore, formulates and encourages solid waste management practices through waste avoidance/reduction, reuse and recycling and, thereafter, final disposal in an environmentally sound manner. These policies should also be mutually supportive with policies such as economic, industrial and urban planning. This strategy expects all stakeholders to formulate integrated plans collectively, for the management of solid waste, based on this strategy.
