This study is an examination of the types of research better adapted to the needs and possibilities of local situations and is useful for researchers working in villages. In this study, the author’s experiences in field-research during the last two decades are collected and presented. The study to determine the extent to which social stability or cohesion exists depends on the existence of the reported and unreported crime rate, presence of social problems, particularly alcoholism, on the one hand and on the other, the influence of religion as a cohesive factor in the community. The entire research objective revolves around the following basic questions: 1) what is development as conceived by the people; 2) what is the difference between what people deem by development and the government officers’, politicians’ or academicians’ concept of development; what are the scientific measurements that one could use to gauge development; and how could the problems of development be identified and strategies worked out, to bring about such development in the country? The data collected in the field is analysed, focusing on the above problems.
