Sri Lanka, like the rest of South Asia, is a developing country wrestling to meet the increasing demand for energy with the use of environmentally sustainable energy sources. Bio-energy provides interesting options to address such issues with the potential to provide affordable access to transport fuel and electricity for the poor. Practical Action and the Technical Advisory Board (TAB) on liquid biofuels in Sri Lanka endeavor to study this largely untapped and under-researched resource in Sri Lanka under the ‘Liquid Biofuels’ project. The main objective of this project is to demonstrate a community managed biofuel plantation and field test extraction processes.
