There exists a two-way relationship between conflict and poverty, as poverty can be both a cause and effect of conflict. Sri Lanka has undergone protracted conflict since the early 1980s. Naturally, poverty has been exacerbated in the conflict-affected region of Sri Lanka during the past quarter century. However, owing to a lack of data, it has proven difficult to gauge the extent and intensity of poverty in the conflict-affected regions of the island.
