Even though the percentage of women population in Sri Lanka is higher, the positions they have held in any level of government, parliamentary, provincial or local is less than 6%. This study highlights that the number of women in government positions will not increase within a short term due to the absence of a temporary quota or reservation. While women play a pivotal role in sustaining the family and community, they have fewer opportunities to influence laws and policies that shape these societies. A political reservation for women will ensure that women’s voices are heard and their experiences taken account of. In this publication, several proposed alternatives have been put forward to amend Sri Lanka’s electoral laws, including g a reservation for women in the national list.
