This compilation brings together the proceedings of a workshop on “Qualitative and Quantitative Poverty Appraisal: Complementarities, Tensions and the Way Forward.” Contributors were asked to submit short summaries of their positions, with detailed references to the literature as necessary. The compilation represents a remarkable statement of the state of the art and the debate on “Qual-Quant,” at a time when the complementarities between the qualitative and the quantitative traditions in poverty analysis are being recognized, but the tensions are ever present, and analysts and policy makers are looking for a way forward in using the two approaches to design effective poverty reduction strategies. The contributions in this collection represent a remarkable perspective on the state of the art, and the debate on poverty appraisal. Poverty analysis has been a battleground between qualitative and quantitative approaches. Practitioners of each approach seem to live in a world of their own, with little interaction with each other. However, the author says this is changing. It is increasingly recognized that policy design for attacking poverty requires an approach that makes best use of the relative strengths of qualitative and quantitative analytical tools, applied to the situation at hand. This volume brings together the world leaders in analysis from both sides of the divide, to push the dialogue forward.
