This tracer study was conducted on 215 trainees who had followed the English Stenographer Certificate Course conducted by NAITA. Data was gathered from these trainees through a mail questionnaire. The finding of this study revealed that changes and improvements need to be carried out in order to conduct this training programme effectively. Of the 215 trainees who followed the course, 150 had secured employment. Among the difficulties encountered by the trainees in obtaining employment were the following: lack of practical experience, lack of knowledge of English, lack of computer proficiency, short hand skills not required at work, less employment available in the stenographer trade and more in the secretarial trade and poor knowledge of letter writing. The employers felt that the training provided was inadequate and not related to new technologies such as computer. Proposals have also been made to improve the teachers’ knowledge of English and their teaching skills.
