This paper is part of a project titled “A History of Ethnic Conflict in Sri Lanka: Recollection, Reinterpretation and Reconciliation.” It explores the manner in which Sinhala consciousness overtime and Sinhala nationalism in modern times have developed and occur in and through the Sinhala language. It exposes how the language has never operated in isolation but instead has been influenced over the years, interacting with Pali, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telegu, Malayalam and more recently with Portuguese, Dutch and English, evolving into the language it is today. These articles are expected to reach many people, including scholars, media personnel, political activists and NGO personnel, provoking thought and discussion on a range of relevant subjects and thereby, guiding decision makers at all levels when they aim to establish a viable framework for peace.
