This publication deals with the cascade based small village tank systems. The study is well substantiated with maps and diagrams, each of which speaks volumes about the subject. The publication comprises a comprehensive introduction to the topic including previous studies, chapters on evolution of the small village tank in North Central Sri Lanka, spread of wetland rice: form and order of cascade systems, some aspects of traditional irrigation in small village tanks and scientific approach to investigations on village irrigation works.
