This book reflects on the range of issues confronting Sri Lanka as it enters the new millennium, fifty years after rejoicing independence. The book comprises of a series of papers that were presented at the conference ‘Sri Lanka at Crossroads: Problems of Politico-Economic and Socio-Cultural change after 50 years of Independence.’ It identifies the prerequisites for successful development – equality of opportunity, social justice, individual freedom, good governance, free and fearless political participation and consensus on key policy areas like education, health and devolution of power. Moreover, it suggests various policy measures that could be adopted to address these problems.
