The aim of the Rapid Assessment (RA) is to gain a better understanding of the nature and intensity of the Worst Forms of Child Labour (WFCL). The volume identifies the similarities in the backgrounds and situations of children who are subjected to child domestic labour. It explores the factors that results in children being sent away for work which prevent them from engaging in domestic labour. It looks into which industries receive children for domestic labour and the demographics of the working children. Furthermore, the study discusses the psychological and physical impact it has on children. The Rapid Assessment focuses on three projects: ‘Sending Communities’ looks into the factors that results in children engaging in domestic labour and ‘School Survey’focuses on five main urban districts in Sri Lanka and collected data on the socio-economic status of child workers in these areas; ‘Behind Closed Doors’ explores the working and living conditions of domestic workplaces and the consequences that these environments have on children. As domestic child labour is an illegal activity, the research available is limited. However this volume gives the reader insights into the problem of Child Domestic Labour in Sri Lanka.
