Wignaraja addresses the issue of alleviation of women,s poverty. Women have a “double burden” to bear in terms of gender and equity; their poverty and their gender double up, rendering them in a position of great disadvantage. Wignaraja argues that the solutions to women,s poverty will come only from actions by women,s groups and by their better organisation. Their powerlessness can only be addressed through collective action. “The organisation of women around issues of common concern is a prerequisite for effective and sustainable economic and social development.” Reference: Women, Poverty and Resources by Ponna Wignaraja
