This paper provides very thought-provoking insight into the abuse of women, whether it be physical, emotional, psychological, economic or sexual. It explores the dynamics of abuse and the different levels on which it affects women. The author focuses mainly on the psychological abuse of women and how it often goes unnoticed as it is considered the ‘norm’. The author uses real incidents to creatively illustrate the psyche of women in these situations. The paper also discusses the cycle of violence and the forces that are at play in these situations. The paper explores the cultural aspects that affect the mind-set of women and taking that into consideration the author shows how the empowerment of women is possible and the active role that women can play in the prevention of abuse.
