The objective of this series of studies is to assess the manner in which children’s rights are observed in Sri Lankan society. This volume focuses on a study carried out in the Nugegoda Provincial Secretariat in the Colombo District of the Western Province of Sri Lanka. If a child is growing up in a shanty residence is exposed to very menacing and damaging influences, it is important to investigate the nature of child rights and the extent to which they are upheld in a community of the aforesaid nature. This study also examines whether families in this community possess the slightest concern about the rational and sound growth of the child
