This book is the result of an experimental research project implemented by Oxfam GB in Sri Lanka, to encourage rural-based Sinhala and Tamil speaking youth to engage in conflict-related research. Oxfam felt this project to be important as the ongoing civil war discouraged research into and discussion of conflict, and other less viable conflicts occurring in society were receiving very little attention. Further, there was a lack of skills and confidence, especially on the part of the youth, to address in productive ways the conflicts that were taking place around them at community levels. Therefore, in an attempt to address this misbalance in perspectives, resources and skills, Oxfam felt that enabling rural youth was a worthy investment in Sri Lanka’s future. The lessons learnt from the project could be applied to enable people in real life situations, to make informed decisions about the causes and nature of conflict and the practicable methods of conflict resolution wherever they find themselves.
