Gayathri Lokuge begins this article by giving readers the background story for the ,Praja Bus, line and illustrating the success of this community- managed transportation service. The service was designed around the concepts of community participation and self management and was based on recognition of the capacity of rural communities to design, implement and maintain a transport service of their own. Lokuge also highlights the major difference between public transport and the community bus service being that the community has a sense of ownership and pride when the service is community managed. Lokuge goes on to state the occasional difficulty in funding this service as there were instances when the company directors had to pay from their personal funds to upkeep this service. Some difficulties faced are the maintenance of this service, financial requirements and the lack of skills and knowledge of the legal functionalities of a company.
