Karin Fernando and Priyanthi Fernando begin by highlighting the three phenomena that have resulted in redistribution and resettlement in the recent past. These three phenomena are listed as the war between the Government of Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), the tsunami of December 2004 and big infrastructure projects of the last three decades. Issues of resettlement will also feature in Sri Lanka,s future development path , with the advent of peace requiring the resettlement of women, men and children displaced due to the fighting; the predicted increases in natural disasters pointing towards those living in vulnerable areas and infrastructure development projects that require people to move from project sites. In this article Karin and Priyanthi also state the different types of resettlement. The risks involved with resettlement such as landlessness, joblessness homelessness, food security and many more are also emphasized. Karin and Priyanthi conclude that there are common issues that need to be addresses in different cases of displacement and resettlement.
