This collection of essays was published in honour of Prof. Thombapillai Jogaratnam who is considered to be the father of agricultural economics in Sri Lanka. The series of papers focuses on diverse topics such as sustainable development – highlighting the importance of operationalisation of the sustainability concepts at the development project level –the issues related to financing sustainable development, economic growth and poverty alleviation, globalization, development issues in micro level agriculture etc. The final paper by Nimal Sandaratne discusses the changing significance and character of Sri Lankan agriculture over the last 50 years. In this paper he argues that despite the fact that the contribution of agriculture to the economy has declined, agriculture still has a significant role to play in assisting the country’s economic growth, poverty alleviation, enhancement of employment opportunities and increasing food security.
