This is a training package, funded by the Commission of the European Communities. It is for the use of tutors in development training and aims to familiarise them with some of the new perspectives on gender awareness, which can influence various issues in planning and policy making. In this module study materials are focused on the ‘gender-aware’ approach to development. These are intended to provide a context and a useful starting point for those who want to introduce gender awareness into the syllabus for their training programmes. The ‘gender-aware’ approach to development is an exciting area to which many theories and contributions are still being added. Being a lively field of work, there are still differences of opinion among the writers of these modules regarding the interpretations of gender awareness, but you will find that this only leads to fruitful debates and discussions.
