The gender indicators in this publication provide a statistical portrait of the situation of women in the developing member countries of the Asian Development Bank. Whilst there are still gaps in this data, sufficient information is provided to see both changes in the situation of women over time and differences between women’s and men’s situation in various areas. Medium term development objectives of the Bank accord high priority to social concerns. These social concerns cut across all traditional sectors and include poverty alleviation, human resource development, women in development and environmental protection. Recently, women in development have expanded to a wider context of gender issues. This publication consists of results from a study conducted by the Center for International Research of the U.S. Bureau of the Census. ‘Gender indicators’ provides several demographic indicators for developing member countries related to population size, age characteristics, fertility, mortality, marriage, Households, Literacy, Education and Labour Force.
