Water related challenges are on the rise. The Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) is a process that seeks to aid countries in dealing with these water related issues in a cost-effective and sustainable manner. This paper deals primarily with the feasibility of using IWRM as a way forward. The paper is intended for professionals, decision-makers and therefore assumes that the reader has a basic knowledge on the subject matter. The paper is divided into two sections. The first section deals with the question ‘What is IWRM?’ This section discusses the four key principles of IWRM in the context of the overall problem and the main challenges that the world is facing. It also deals with the integration between natural systems such as between land and water management, and between Human systems such as integration in national policy development. The second section of the paper discusses how to implement IWRM. In this section the nature of the legal environment is discussed. The roles of the government and of other institutions and organisations are discussed in detail. This section also looks at the management instruments that can be utilized and at other important factors that must be looked into when implementing IWRM.
