Following a brief introduction to the background of migration, the paper reviews the changing scale and scope of migration are also discussed. The paper concludes that there are benefits of migration to both the women herself and the family. Most women interview for the micro-studies have expressed the view that the experience of working abroad had been unique, the decision has been their own, that even the temporary status of being the primary earner had enhanced their independence and strengthened their role in family decision making. However the social costs of migration are get to be assessed. A better understanding of negative features would provide a basis for the formulation of policies which would reduce the detrimental effects and promote the types of migration that would have favorable consequences
