The movement to control narcotics in Sri Lanka began in the year 1656 more than three centuries ago. The book also traces the historical development of the laws and control mechanisms relating to narcotics and drugs in their social, economic and political perspectives. The book also contains and analysis of the social and legal dimensions of the existing laws relating to narcotics and drugs. Areas which require further clarification or reform have been identified and suggestions have been made for legislative changes and corrective mechanisms, where necessary. Drug abuse is a major problem having many far-reaching implications and ramifications. The problem is growing both in magnitude and complexity. A disquieting feature in the local drug scene is the political dimensions to international trafficking. The publication hopes to stimulate further action by the Sri Lankan authorities to cope effectively with the problems associated with drug abuse.
