This report was prepared as an alternative to the National Report for the World Summit on Sustainable Development. The report reveals people’s perceptions on the present state of the environment. It is organized around several key sectors such as agriculture, industry, poverty, biodiversity, governance and energy. Embedded in the text are brief profiles of practices that are best suited for emulation if goals of sustainability are to be achieved. The narratives are also interrupted in a positive way to highlight issues, agitation and failure. The purpose of the study is not only to document the country’s progress since the Rio Summit or to highlight how lax it has been, but to contribute to the debates surrounding issues that are of critical concern to all humankind. Moreover, the report seeks to discover the truth that lies between rhetoric and practice with a view to lead to world that is even remotely close to that which was envisaged in 1992.
