“This collection of essays is the outcome of a consultation conducted by AMIC with the support of FES, in September 2001, among journalists, academics and government and NGO representatives from South and Southeast Asia, on the experiences of their countries in tackling poverty and the media,s part in these struggles. While ‘poverty and the media, is their unifying theme, the authors have approached this broad topic in a variety of ways. Some have focused on political, social and economic interactions linked to poverty eradication, in which the role of media is just one piece in the mosaic. Others have provided a broad picture of the dimensions of poverty in their countries. A third set of essays focuses on specific and crucial aspects of the media and poverty debate, such as the linkages between poverty, women and the media in India and Thailand; and between poverty and the failings of the education system in Cambodia, and contributions that the media can make to redress this situation. This book presents an authentic picture of the struggles in these countries to eradicate poverty, and the nature of the media,s interaction with these struggles.” Reference: Poverty in Asia: Media Challenges and Responses
