This short paper examines women's political leadership in Sri Lanka, and the role of leadership through the provincial council as a point for women's entry into the political sphere. The author finds that many women enter Sri Lankan politics through the death of a male relative whose position they fill, but some do manage to enter local politics without the intercession of men. The paper also examines the way these women both subvert and support patriarchal structures through their campaign.
