This report includes proceedings of the seminar on ‘The Role of Women Workers in the Plantation Economy’ held at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute in 1979. In view of the increasingly important role played by women workers in Asian countries, the seminar was organised to examine the depth of the contribution to socio-economic development through their participation in plantation agriculture. The papers, discussions and group reports from the seminar are presented here and it highlights many features of the role of women workers and the status held by them within the plantation economy. An attempt has also been made to recognize the role of trade union organizations in the upliftment of women workers’ status in the plantation economy. This publication is a useful and a valuable resource that contributes to the knowledge on the plantation workers in the plantation agriculture.
