The report is based on a unique survey of Citizen Report Card study of maternal homes in India. The purpose of the survey was to corroborate evidence on the poor quality of services provided and the widespread corruption in maternity homes. It is also a mechanism to advocate civil society organisations and strengthen initiatives to provide better healthcare in the sector. The project was undertaken in 2010 involving a total of 500 patients and 77 staff members of these facilities and was successfully pilot tested at maternity homes of Bangalore, where it can be replicated for wider impact. The manual is designed for community groups, NGOs and research institutions working in the health sector, specifically maternity health service delivery.
