This study sheds light on a pressing issue that has not been researched extensively in recent times in Sri Lanka. It looks at why and how women are trafficked in the process of migration and what the consequences are as a result. The study draws from the experiences of migrant women (internal and external migrants) and is based on the premise that all migration does not end in trafficking but that the increase in migration can lead to an increased number of persons being trafficked in the process of migration. The study takes a rights based perspective in analyzing the process of migration and the issue of trafficking. It proposes a multi stakeholder approach aimed at prevention, protection of the vulnerable and the prosecution of offenders. The specific recommendations identify the need to address root causes and suggest community based mechanisms of vigilance committees and rights protection networks.
