Published in the June edition of Sri Lanka’s leading business magazine, LMD, the article focuses on the issue of energy and how much of it is left to save our planet from an impending crisis. The industrial revolution was born out of the discovery of fossil fuels decades ago and today, has become the key contributor to global warming. The goal for the forthcoming years has now shifted to the importance of sustainable energy, where more renewable energy is used efficiently and where there is a steady reduction of fossil fuels as a source of energy. The article also points out the key challenges that Sri Lanka will face if it is to adopt a ‘greener’ approach, as it will hamper the target of maintaining a growth rate of around eight per cent. Diversifying energy sources, increasing energy efficiency and the establishment of policy to support sustainable energy are the three ideas that have been put forward in order to contribute to the global challenge of saving energy for Sri Lanka and the future of the globe. The article is based on inputs from the stakeholder engagements in sustainable energy goals for Sri Lanka.
